Does anyone else get a bad feeling about what’s happening in Minneapolis? It feels like people’s hatred for Tim Walz is blinding them to the broader implications of a military-like occupation of a city, something that could just as easily happen elsewhere. This does not seem like a good-faith effort, either; otherwise, as Bret has mentioned, there would be discussion of Chinese nationals as well. The focus on the Somali narrative, meanwhile, feels every bit as manufactured as the weapons-of-mass-destruction narrative was. Even if the Somali fraud stories are true, they are likely a fraction of the fraud committed every day in Washington, DC, through USAID, NIAID, or similar institutions.
What many people may not realize is that the U.S. has been conducting its longest-running military campaign in Somalia, largely outside public attention. As has been reported, last year alone Donald Trump more than doubled the previous annual record for airstrikes, with over 120.
And now, seemingly out of nowhere, Benjamin Netanyahu has recognized Somaliland. I don’t claim to fully understand what that entails, but I’ve heard credible people speculate that it may be connected to future relocation plans for Palestinians.
All I’m saying is that it’s easy for many on the right to dismiss the military-occupation-style approach in Minneapolis because of their hostility toward Walz. But ICE is increasingly being used as a political instrument, a kind of Trojan horse, to establish new precedents for applying federal pressure on cities or states the current administration disagrees with. I remember when the right used to push back on federal marijuana bans, not because they liked marijuana, but because they believed states should remain sovereign and make their own laws.

Brett, I would love to see an inside rail episode with guest Mike Benz. He’s former state dept and has an encyclopedic knowledge of the censorship industrial complex and all things USAID.
He can explain the lack of follow through on DOGE. He can also layout the vast network of connective tissue between Dept of State, CIA, USAID, and the subsidiary non-governmental organizations that truely do the heavy lifting (heavy dirty work) both domestically and on foreign soil. For better or worse, mostly worst.
