Forrest Maready is the author of “The Moth in the Iron Lung”, among other books. It tells a very different story of the Polio epidemic than the one you are likely familiar with, a story with radically different implications for health and medicine. Bret talks with Forest about his book and his interpretation of the evidence with an evolutionary bent to the conversation.

Theme Music: Thank you to Martin ...
Bret, thank you for your wonderfully brave and vulnerable essay about Heather and you. I have long admired your relationship and the way the two of you are a beautiful gestalt. It seems profoundly spiritual to me 😉
I’m writing because you said “we need a new myth about soulmates” and I would argue we do already, in spades! But sadly, we haven’t provided the tools for young couples to recognize and navigate the array of possible soulmate archetypes through the anxiety and narcissism of our shallow modern retail mindset into a deeper, albeit wilder and freer openness to be gripped by an archetypal myth (the red thread, the split soul, the twin flame, anima/animus projection, cosmic recognition, etc), and the archetypal Other (the Helen, Mary, Warrior, Trickster, Thief, etc) and follow the path where it leads!
Then, as you and Heather have modeled, we go through the necessary stage(s) of disillusionment and reckoning toward the mature myth (in my opinion it is the covenant myth) that ...
I'd love to hear thoughts on the safety of xylitol--in particular in how it is manufactured. I have a bag I made toothpaste out of that is manufactured from birch. The research he has says it comes from corn cob. I'm sure both are true--question is what quality of corn cob or birch, and how many steps are in between its raw material and what it becomes when used as a baking alternative or nasal spray. My husband and I are in conflict over whether it should be used.
I keep thinking about the beggining of Episode 311 in which B&H talk about gendered differences in empathy. The results of the study didn't make sense to either of them, but they made sense to me.
I'm relatively new in thinking about things through the evolutionary lens--Dark Horse has been my guide since about 2020. I'm a therapist, a mother of four, and a life long over-empathizer. I have sensory reactions to other people's pain. Seeing a wound, watching violence of any real kind, actually makes my body hurt. (Yes, it often sucks). I also, strangely (as I was a competative athelete), have a difficult time rooting for any team to win--I am too often thinking/ feeling about what the losers are experiencing--even though I know losing is an important thing to experience, and good and right in its own way. I know there is justice in the better team winning--and I feel deeply for those whove worked their tails off only to lose.
When something arises like the recent shootings in Minnesotta, I am able ...
