In this 250th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.
In this week’s episode, we discuss the election results. The outcome—Trump in office, and both legislative bodies having a Republican majority—has the strong potential to be positive for everyone, and yet so many people are scared or angry. We discuss why, and provide some reasons that letting go of your fear and anger is the right thing to do. Also: what do exit polls reveal about who voted blue vs red? Who are the women who voted for Trump? How can you level up yourself and your understanding of the world? Then: why is the New York Times producing graphics that omit some of its own data, making it appear that the West coast had no shift in voting between 2020 and 2024 (spoiler: a significant majority of counties across the countries moved red this election). Finally: which party had more people who hoped for authoritarian crackdowns just two years ago? And what did the CDC have planned for the dirty and unvaccinated?

Breaking Out of the Silo
Bret often talks about the Cartesian crisis, and I’m not sure I interpret it exactly the same way he does. To me, it means refactoring your thoughts (I’m a software developer, so I think in those terms). It’s stressful because it requires revisiting old beliefs, memories, and assumptions, and checking them against biases you didn’t realize you had. For example, I had to completely rethink how I viewed people like Sam Harris and Noam Chomsky.
I’m not someone who normally watches TV, but there is a multi season show called Silo that struck me as the perfect metaphor for the Cartesian crisis. It’s about people living in a massive underground bunker after a post-apocalyptic event, all raised on a tightly controlled, false story about history and the world in general. The story goes, a few characters start to realize that (surprise) that what they were told about history and the world itself is mostly wrong.

Heresy and the Evolution of Goliath
Over the last few years, I have been trying to make sense of the world I see around me, and in the process, I’ve landed in a very strange place, as anyone else who might have if they questioned any of the many narratives being shoved down our throats.
I’m from Wisconsin, and lately, I’m reminded of Aaron Rodgers, how he went from being the most celebrated human being in Wisconsin to basically a heretic for denying the vaccine. If you’re not from Wisconsin, it’s hard to explain just how big Aaron Rodgers was, the guy was bigger than Bret Favre and Vince Lombardi. He could sneeze on a cloth and could auction it off for a lot of $$. Anyways, I remember well being at a usual WhatsApp neighborhood Packer party a few years back, everyone brought homemade food. We had a Covid circle of trust going, where we all agreed to only hang out with each other (covid lockdown loophole) which I’m sure none of us violated :-P. I am a stirfry guy so I brought some fried...
