Regarding free speech and some recent events, including the firing of Jimmy Kimmel
I find myself disagreeing with Bret today, which is extremely rare. I hope he reads this, however as I think it is a fair argument to consider, especially when it comes to Jimmy Kimmel (which is addressed toward the end.)
As for the celebration of Charlie Kirk's murder falling under the purview of the right to free speech:
I think we can all agree that murder is probably the ultimate anti-social act, so the celebration or support of it belongs in the same category. You can say whatever you want, but if you reveal yourself to be lacking the general conscience and morals of the society in which you live, that society has the right to then reject you. That rejection may take the form of shaming you, ostracizing you, or removing you from your job, especially if it is a position of influence such as a teacher, newscaster, or public figure. It is not only the right of that society, but one can argue it is the duty of that society if it wishes to remain civilized. One does not have a right to one's job. If the employer (whether private or public) deems your behavior, which includes your speech, unacceptable, you can and should be fired. Say whatever you want, but what you do--including what you say--does and should have consequences. Regarding Jimmy Kimmel specifically: I do no know what he said that got him fired. What I do know was that his ratings had as of late dropped substantially and his job was already teetering. If he said something that caused enough of a public outcry of disapproval to prompt his dismissal, then there is nothing controversial about it. Again, he has the right to say whatever he wants. He does NOT have the RIGHT to that particular platform on which to say it, and if the audience of that platform disapproves of him that vehemently, then the public, and society, has spoken. His dismissal is the shame that he deserves for his unacceptable anti-social behavior.
