As a dyslexic sometime words that seem synonymous can be confusing. I asked Grok to explain: Difference between complicated and complex systems

"A complicated system is highly detailed but ultimately predictable. It has many parts that interact in a linear, mechanical way, following clear rules. Think of a Swiss watch: it has hundreds of tiny gears and components, but each part’s function is known, and if you understand the design, you can predict its behavior or fix it by addressing a specific issue. Complicated systems can be mastered through analysis and expertise—like assembling a jet engine or solving a difficult math equation. They don’t adapt or change on their own; their behavior is stable and deterministic.

A complex system, on the other hand, is characterized by unpredictability and emergent behavior due to the dynamic, nonlinear interactions of its parts. These systems often adapt and evolve over time, making them harder to control or predict. A good example is a beehive: individual bees follow simple rules, but their interactions lead to emergent outcomes—like the hive’s ability to regulate temperature or find new food sources—that can’t be easily predicted by studying one bee. Complex systems often exhibit self-organization and feedback loops, like ecosystems, the stock market, or human societies. Small changes can lead to disproportionate effects (e.g., the “butterfly effect” in weather systems)."

Now it makes sense. Another factor to understanding is I have better comprehension with visual input than audio input.

Is Bret allergic to European wheat?

No live stream today, instead Bret is running an experiment from Spain.

I Will Be at My Desk

While the TV spews unrest,
and the birds sing from their nests,
the drumming sound of
“there is nothing going down” —
so, I'll be at my desk

It is not for us to fret,
to worry about what our eyes never met.
No matter where the poles may go,
that’s beyond our control.

There are no great pyramids in my time,
no ancient structures celestially aligned —
only beautiful software,
some of which I helped design.
In the age to come,
will anyone know what has been done?

As we descend
into an ancient cycle,
while the sun shines new colors —
perhaps we may all grow old.

All I know is, if you need me,
if things get out of control,
you’ll find me —
still, at my desk.

I this this explanation of how religions evolved will be interesting to our hosts, Bret and Heather

Can someone with access to the terrorfying land-beyond-the-paywall please read this and tear it apart? The abstract was too much for me to take. I can just hear Heather losing her mind over this one.

“Transfeminist pregnancy: reproductive speculation, genre, and desire

Carlo Sariego

Abstract
In the explosion of abortion bills post Dobbs, anti-abortion language identifies women according to their reproductive potential: ‘Woman' means [...] an individual with a uterus, regardless of any gender identity.’ According to this definition pregnancy or the potential for pregnancy define womanhood. Women without uteruses (cis and trans) are excluded, and trans men with uteruses are absorbed into the category of woman. This reproductive language, tethering transgender and reproductive politics, requires a reassessment of how pregnancy is theorised in feminist and transgender studies. In the following article, I argue that pregnancy is not to be defined by biological phenomena but instead as a ...
